You have a house, you own it, have enjoyed life in it, but now it’s starting to show signs of serious wear and tear.
The tiles on the roof are leaking, the upstairs ceiling has started showing water damage. Pipes are dripping, causing water damage to the downstairs.
The floors are rickety, joists starting to crack and split. Mould is creeping up the walls. There’s a musty smell in the air.
But it’s all ok, because all we need to do is give it all a lick of paint, put new carpets down, and everything will be good as new. Yes?
But this is how we seem to think in terms of ourselves!
I see posts, adverts, and advice talking about how to manage this issue, how to deal with that issue, how to live with the other issue.
Whether we are talking about pain, anxiety, stress, insomnia, addictions, depression, or any other issue, or even with our own advancement and progress in life. “Dealing with”, “coping with”, “living with”, is just the same as putting a lick of paint onto those damp walls, or even worse, just leaving it as is.
It goes further than that. In the house we can sand down, replaster, wallpaper, replace the floorboards, etc, and everything will appear to be perfect, and will look it for longer, but how long before the leaks in the pipes and the roof cause the same damage again or worse. And that’s what’s happening with regular therapy, taking pills, and many of the other options we use to deal with issues. You will feel ok, almost back to normal, but how long before the issue returns.
The next step is if you decide to sell the house. If all that you’ve done is patch it up, cover over the damage, then a surveyor will spot it, and the value of the house will drop, or you won’t be able to sell it. And again the same with us, our relationships, personal and professional, will be less valued, or even non existent.
What you need to do with the house is bite the bullet and fix the roof, replace the boards, sort the pipes, and then repair everything else. You know its going to take time, it’s going to be expensive, and it’s going to be messy, but it’s the only way to truly return the value to the house.
And so it is with us. We need to go above and beyond the scope of traditional therapies, pills, or any other methods widely utilised.
Don’t hire the equivalent of the “cowboy builders”.
Work with the best, get to the real issues, and if need be, conduct a complete rebuild.
Your mind and body is the biggest asset you will ever own. You can’t replace it, or sell it and move on, so take care of it, invest in it, and look after it.
